Certificate III in Individual Support (Ageing)

This Certificate is the desired qualification sought by many aged care organisations when employing staff.

The qualification reflects the role of workers in the community and/or residential setting who follow an individualised plan to provide person-centred support to people who may require support due to ageing, disability or some other reason. Work involves using discretion and judgement in relation to individual support as well as taking responsibility for own outputs. Workers have a range of factual, technical and procedural knowledge, as well as some theoretical knowledge of the concepts and practices required to provide person-centred support.

On completion of this qualification participants will be able to:

  • Provide support and assistance to older people to meet their physical, emotional and behavioural needs
  • Communicate effectively with older people and team members
  • Work in a safe and effective manner in the aged care sector
  • Provide information and report to team members in a verbal and written form

13 units are required to achieve this qualification as per the following:

  • 7 Core units
  • 6 Elective units

To achieve this qualification, the student must also complete at least 120 hours of work placement. 



CHCCCS015 – Provide individualised support

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to organise, provide and monitor support services within the limits established by an individualised plan.

CHCCCS023 – Support independence and wellbeing

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to provide individualised services in ways that support independence, as well as, physical and emotional wellbeing.

CHCCOM005 – Communicate and work in health or community services

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to communicate effectively with clients, colleagues, management and other industry providers.

 CHCDIV001 – Work with diverse people

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to work respectfully with people from diverse social and cultural groups and situations, including Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people.

CHCLEG001 – Work legally and ethically

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to identify and work within the legal and ethical frameworks that apply to an individual job role.

HLTAAP001 – Recognise healthy body systems

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to work with basic information about the human body and to recognise and promote ways to maintain healthy functioning of the body.

HLTWHS002 – Follow safe work practices for direct client care

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required for a worker to participate in safe work practices to ensure their own health and safety, and that of others in work environments that involve caring directly for clients.


CHCAGE001 – Facilitate the empowerment of older people

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to respond to the goals and aspirations of older people and provide support services in a manner that focuses on improving health outcomes and quality of life.

CHCAGE005 – Provide support to people living with dementia

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to provide person-centred care and support to people living with dementia. It involves following and contributing to an established individual plan.

CHCPAL001 – Deliver care services using a palliative approach

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to care for people with life-threatening or life-limiting illness and/or normal ageing process within a palliative approach.

CHCCCS011 – Meet personal support needs

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to determine and respond to an individual’s physical personal support needs and to support activities of daily living.


CHCDIS007 – Facilitate the empowerment of people with disability

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to facilitate the empowerment of people with disability to deliver rights based services using a person-centred approach.

HLTAID003 – Provide first aid

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to provide a first aid response to a casualty. The unit applies to all workers who may be required to provide a first aid response in a range of situations, including community and workplace settings.

This qualification is typically completed within a 12 month period, though it can take longer if completed as part of an on-the-job traineeship program.

Students have a choice of two delivery modes.

Classroom Based Training

AMA Training Services recommends the classroom based option for ‘new’ entrants to the care industry. This facilitates a strong foundation in the principles and requirements of individual support. Classes are conducted at our Training Centres located in Perth, Rockingham, Mandurah and Bunbury on weekdays. Training timetables are clearly outlined at the start of the Training Program for the full duration of the program. Assessments will occur in the workplace at least twice during the course of the Training Program.


Self Paced Learning

This is an alternative option for those that are unable to attend classroom based training. Each participant will be provided with a series of books, each containing a cluster of units. The books are easy to follow with some graphics included to help during the Training Program. On completion of the books, assessments are then conducted. First Aid must be completed in the classroom. AMA trainers / assessors are contactable at any time by telephone or email.

Course Fee (non-traineeship): $1950.00* (price may reduce in case of credit transfer/national recognition of units)

Course Fee (traineeship): $1901.25** (concession rates may apply)


*Payment for this qualification is spread over four equal instalments of $487.50, collected in three month intervals as outlined below.  

  1. The first instalment is due upon receipt of enrolment, and once paid will give students access to their first set of units.
  2. After three months, or if a student requests access to new units earlier, students will be invoiced for the second instalment and upon payment will gain access to their next set of units.
  3. This process will continue until all four instalments are paid and the qualification is completed.

While AMA Training Services welcomes students undertaking the Certificate III in Individual Support on their own, that does require them to find their own placement opportunity to complete the course.
